Desert X AlUla

ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Desert X AlUla extends the Desert X mission to foster discourse amongst desert communities with a view to creating open and international cultural exchange. Co-curated with Raneem Farsi and Aya Alireza, art originating in those conditions found in Southern California was set in conversation with newly commissioned works by artists from Saudi Arabia and the surrounding regions. Responding to the unique conditions found in this part of the world, artists were invited to project their voices and to create of the extraordinary natural and social history around them objects and experiences that reflect upon the matchless spectacle of the geologic epic, the radical abstraction of the surroundings and the singular incursions of man into the seemingly barren landscape. By opening an ancient Arabian culture to dialogue with that of Western art and values the Desert X AlUla exhibition and accompanying local and educational programs promises to expand not just ideas and perceptions of the desert itself but also the cultures that have made it home.
